Spruce Grove School District, formed from a part of Excelsior School District, started at the Spruce Grove road crossing of Copsey Creek to the north, included Little High Valley to the west, to the hills south of Steinhart Lake and east to the county line.

There was a grove of spruce or fir trees above the old emigrant road from Cache Creek to Putah Creek and to the southwest, near the higher elevations of the road.

The school was first located at a point just above the present road and about 1/4 mile up from the Baylard place. After only a few years it moved to its location up the road and to the south of Arthur Copsey's place.
